Hearing Beyond Words

Most of what passes for listening is actually preparing your response while the other person talks. True listening is a rare and precious gift, a quality of attention that allows another person to feel genuinely met and seen. When you listen fully, you put aside your agenda, your need to fix or advise, and are present for whatever needs to be expressed. This quality of really listening to another person can, in itself, be healing, sometimes more powerful than any wisdom you could ever conceivably offer.

Deep listening extends beyond human conversation to include listening to non-verbal signals and to the subtle promptings of intuition. Developing this capacity for deep listening requires that you quiet your mental mind.  You need to reduce your mental chatter and cultivate receptivity, which is countercultural in a world that values constant output. Yet it is precisely in this receptive listening mode that you access deeper dimensions of connection with the other person. The practice transforms you from someone who just listens to someone who can hear the truth speaking through all things. By cultivating this awareness, you gain greater understanding, empathy, and a more authentic connection to others. This mindful practice enables you to really hear beyond the words which are spoken and to respond with intention, rather than react from unconscious patterns.  All of which leads to more meaningful interactions and a more truthful experience of life.
