The world can feel overwhelming; every day brings additional news and social media updates that stir anxiety and provoke worry for many people. It is normal to feel unsettled when events unfold rapidly or seemingly without reason, yet awareness remains important. Entirely avoiding the flow of such information is not a solution, and neither is immersing yourself constantly in it.
One way to stay balanced is to limit your exposure to these streams of information. Checking trusted news sources once or twice a day for ten to thirty minutes can give you the information you need without consuming too much of your attention. Short, intentional engagement provides the opportunity to absorb facts without spiralling into the narrative. This limitation of exposure can help to keep you more grounded and your mind calmer.
Pausing before you react or respond to any such item is another powerful practise. Waiting even a few minutes (or ideally more than 10 minutes) before sharing or commenting on events allows space for your thoughts and emotions to settle, rather than them still being in a state of reactive flux. Reflection before response prevents impulsive reactions from amplifying anxiety, and it gives you time to consider situations with clarity rather than tension.
Additionally, focusing on what is within your control is a beneficial means of reducing anxiety or stress from such events. Letting go of the expectation that you need to respond or attempt to “fix” everything reduces unnecessary pressure on yourself. Allowing your attention to be focused on what you can influence helps to create a more balanced response and reduces stress or anxiety from propagating.
Notice how anxiety or similar aspects of stress can manifest in your body. Tight shoulders, shallow breathing, or a restless mind are all signals worth observing and are often great indicators of these aspects building within you. Recognising these sensations without judging them provides a means for you to be aware and to actively determine how to reduce their effects within. There are many tried and proven techniques which you can perform to reduce these aspects of stress and anxiety in your life. As previously mentioned, the primary method is limiting your exposure. This can then be supplemented by various relaxation techniques to release any anxiety or tension which builds up. Breathing deeply, taking mindful walks, or finding quiet moments can all help reset your nervous system and restore perspective. Even a few minutes of pause can create space for restoring some calmness and balance. These small acts are not about avoidance. They allow you to engage thoughtfully rather than being swept along by tides of sentiment.
None of these approaches discussed will change the events of the world, or what may show up in your various social media feeds, yet importantly, they provide ways to better manage these sources of information without being consumed. Awareness paired with self-care creates a sustainable relationship with news and social media, preserving your energy, attention, and emotional balance. By protecting your own calm, you can participate more thoughtfully in the world around you.
